Ramlan Bin Zainol Abidin
Group Chief Operating Officer, Urban Transportation
Ramlan’s first job was in banking, with Eon Bank Berhad and in 2005 he switched careers to the automotive industry which he absolutely loves.
Ramlan spent 14 years with the Scomi Group Berhad, a global service provider involved in oil and gas, transport engineering and marine transportation. He handled over 300 fleet cars for communications giant, Maxis, before moving to Scomi’s public transport division working with companies such as Rapid Penang, Rapid KL and Panorama Melaka. Ramlan was instrumental in securing a collaboration with Volvo Bus Malaysia for MRT’s Feeder Bus projects, the UK’s ADL Bus company for Hong Kong’s Double Decker bus projects and with Mercedes Benz Malaysia for RapidKL’s bus refurbishment project. During his time in Scomi, Ramlan was also involved in exploring overseas business opportunities with companies in China and India, especially in the bus and special vehicles segments.
Ramlan’s extensive experience in public transportation made him the ideal person to lead Mobilus through its pilot project in Iskandar, Johor. It was the first Autonomous Rapid Transit (“ART”) export outside China and a trailblazer for a new type of public transportation system in Malaysia. The pilot project has paved away for the implementation of the “road sharing” policy currently being studied by the Malaysian authorities. Due to the success of the Iskandar pilot project, Ramlan and his team secured Mobilus’ first project, the Kuching Urban Transportation System (“KUTS”) by Sarawak Metro Sdn Bhd, wholly owned by the Sarawak State Government. The project will be the first Hydrogen Trackless Tram in the world, as well as being the biggest ART project outside China. This has put Mobilus on the next level as a major urban transportation player in Malaysia.
In his leisure time, Ramlan enjoys driving and cycling. His motto is, “I am going to make them an offer they cannot refuse!”
